Mario Kart Wii Wii, Nintendo, 39.99

Nintendo has been creating Mario Kart titles for more than 15 years. It's obvious when playing Mario Kart Wii that the developers have spent every moment learning from the previous games for this turbo-charged version for the great white Wii. From the lush graphics to the crazy power-ups, the devilish tracks to the responsive vehicles, everything you'd want from a driving game is here. A nice touch is the Wiimote wheel that comes bundled with the game:it might not have any impact on how well you drive, but it makes the whole experience even more fun. Super. *****

BOOKS.(Brief article) Don't be fooled: this isn't the full fifth instalment of the top racing title, it's merely an amuse-bouche to whet the appetites of gamers who feel they've been starved of fun since GT4. There are six tracks on offer and each is realised in hilariously hi-def graphics. The cars are a boy-racer's fantasy and driving them is out of this world. Prologue will leave gamers hungry for more. *****

Assassin's Creed: Altair's ChroniclesDS, Ubisoft, 29.99

Rather than offering a scaled-down replica of the console version of Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft has developed a special hand-held title for the DS. It's good news for anyone who wants to explore Altair's environment, but those expecting the same vast vistas and open- world freedom of the main game will be disappointed. Still, with its Prince of Persia-style gameplay (think swashbuckling combat and deadly traps), it's an adventure packed with Eastern promise. ***

Magic Made FunDS, Nintendo, 24.99

Mixing sleight of hand and high-tech trickery, Magic Made Fun (above) is a strange little game that is weirdly compelling. Divided into three parts - Solo Magic, Magic Show and Magic Training - it aims to teach Paul Daniels-wannabes how to baffle their friends with a series of simple-to-execute tricks. It works well on the whole, but it would be good to see more tricks on offer and less pointless mini-games. ***
